Tina adds a splash of colour to her Henriksdal barstools simply by dyeing the cover.

Tina says, "After experiencing several months of long, black cat hairs and wine spots on our white Henriksdal barstool seat covers, I decided to dye them.

Being a fabric artist and frequent dyer, I was already familiar with a low-water immersion dyeing technique from Ellen Anne Eddy.

I prepared several colors of Procion MX dyes, in an analogous color range (yellows to greens to blues to plums and purples), dabbed them on with a makeup applicator sponge, then set the four covers to cure in four quart-sized baggies. After scouring them (hot, extended machine washing with dye-fixing detergent), I was happy to see that they survived without shrinking or falling apart.

The new covers not only coordinate better with our wonderful bright green dining chairs, but add a nice, much-needed splash of color to our all-white kitchen and ties it better to the adjacent outdoor garden patio."

Salad bowls are not only good for tossing greens, they make good spherical speakers too. Here's a pair from Robert that are getting the kudos.

Jule inherited an old piece of furniture which she deftly upgraded into a mirrored vanity. Guess mirrors and vanity do go well together.

Jule says, "I was given an old student desk which my parents bought at a garage sale before I was born. I never liked it, but it was really functional as a vanity in my bedroom. So, one day it occurred to me that it had the right shape to convert into a piece of mirrored furniture.

So, I went to Ikea for mirrors (Lots mirrors: 4 pack for $5) and new knobs (Antik: 2 pack for $5). A few cans of spray paint and some black grout from Home Depot (I was afraid to drill through the mirror, so I left a space for the knobs and filled it with grout.) All totaled it was about a $50 investment. Not including the chair, which I got the Borje chair from the “As Is” department at Ikea for $30 (the white upholstery was dirty, but nothing that a little cleaning didn't resolve.)

I am pleased with the results and even my husband who hates mirrored furniture likes it.

Instructions:
· Remove knobs
· Lightly sand surface (especially the top which was damaged)
· Spray paint with glossy black paint
· Measure and cut mirrors using a mirror cutter (it take a lot of practice – my price includes the 3 tiles I destroyed trying to figure out how to cut it. Then my husband figured it out on the 1st try, so I made him cut the rest.)
· Adhere the mirror with liquid nails made for mirrors
· Fill the seams with black grout
· Put on new hardware

Sad news. Please do be careful if you own the Iris or Alvine roman blinds, especially if you have a child.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission release, on April 4, 2008, a 1-year-old girl in Greenwich, Conn. became entangled in the inner cord of an IKEA Roman Blind and strangled. The child was in a portable playpen that was located underneath a fully lowered roman blind.

Lack light table for silkscreen painting

Kayobi hacked the perfect light table from the Lack coffee table.

She says, "I needed a light table to work on finding the tiny holes when hand painting silkscreens. I had precious little space in my game room/craft room. I had been using an Ikea Lack table as a workspace anyway so I decided it shouldn't be too difficult to pull out the middle and put in some lights. Interestingly, there is a weird honeycomb cardboard support in between the top and bottom but it was no match for the power tools. A friend donated an old white plexiglass shop sign. Acetone make short work of the old paint (and my head - whew!). I took the plexiglass to another friend's woodworking shop where he cut it to size. After buffing the corners and drilling the places where it would be screwed into the table it was ready to assemble. Three florescent desk lights fit perfectly into the bottom of the table. The whole process start to finish only took about 4 hours. I think it turned out well. I use it all the time.

Shortly after that I moved into an even smaller space and my workspace shrunk again. I bought a twin Dalselv and the light table fit perfectly behind the bed. I added a pegboard with zip ties for a dual-sided sleep/workspace. Fancy!

Tim from Germany hacked a computer desk so he could store away his PC, without all the cables showing.

He says, "I used one Vika Amon 120x60cm (47"x24") and one 100x60cm (39"x24"), both white. The bigger one became my real desk, the latter the 'leg'. I sawed the latter into two parts, one 70cm (28") and 30cm (12") (which wouldn't be needed at all). I attached the bigger piece to the bottom of the 120x60 using Ikea Sivert brackets leaving a space of 30cm (12") to the side where my PC case was supposed to be.

To hold it, I took an Ärlig 60x60cm (24"x24"), halved it and screwed some Capita 16cm legs to one half and placed the PC on it. I mounted the other half using some Stödis brackets to the upper part of the leg as a little storage shelf. Having seen just2cool's 'jer la pita' I thought that I could do that, too.

So I got me some angled Capita legs, a black-brown Lack shelf (the short one of course) and mounted it to my desk. And this is the result."

Anne figures out a smart solution for more prep space in her tiny kitchen. It may look small but it packs quite a few compartments - for recycling and even a kitty litter.

She says, "The kitchen in my rental is tiny. The space that was left after refinishing the kitchen required that I keep into account a wall ledge, baseboard heating, weak wall paneling on top of old plaster walls, and a one-inch sloping of the floor. My most important focus was to find additional space to hide away my cats litter box, and place recycling bins. Additional counter tops and storage would come in handy, of course.

I opted for Pronomen butcher block counter top, mounted on a single Vika Furusund table leg, held in place by the traditional Capita cabinet legs. This constellation allowed me to mount the opposite side of the countertop onto the wall ledge without adding additional height, which would have been the case with a traditional kitchen cabinet. The Capita legs are easily adjusted too - again, pretty helpful in the unevenly sloped floor.

The Vika Furusund cabinet or table leg offers the necessary space for my two Rationell recycling bins, as well as convenient access from the side for additional storage. I rounded it all off by hanging a left-over Ikea curtain (sorry forgot the name) on a tension rod between the wall and the table leg to provide access for my cat to her litter box. Overall, this prep space has worked out well, though one day I will have to take the time and paint it to match the rest of the kitchen."

Charles hacks a neat TV stand from Ikea kitchen cabs. Similar cabinets, like this one, sells for much more.

He says, "I've been busy building a new TV stand for the in-wall 'nook' in my living room. I took some Ikea cabinets, put 3 of them together, made it more sturdy, added wheels, and customized the heck out of it. I just need to reinforce the back, and put side-panels on. It didn't come out too bad, and it's got a nice space for the subwoofer in the center now."

If you're the type who does a little reading in bed before turning in, this hack from Carter does the trick. And all for $30. Not bad indeed.

Carter says, "This hack uses a $7.99 Minde Mirror, and two $3.99 Morker table lamps from Ikea to make a beautiful framed mirror with reading lamps, perfect for over the bed.

In addition to the items from Ikea I used 1x4 wood tongue and groove boards to make the frame, angle irons to hold the frame together, 7/16' bolts for the lights, tape for the cords, wood stain, polyurethane finish, and various screws and hanging hardware.

Simply cut the boards with 45 degree angles to size to make the frame around the mirror. Make sure the groove side is on the inside of the frame. Connect 3 sides together using the angle irons. Slide the mirror into the groove then attach the fourth side. Next, I stained and finished the wood. Be sure to cover the mirror while doing this. Once dry, drill holes where you want the lights to go and screw the lights on with the bolts. Tape the cords to the back of the mirror and frame so they hang down closer to the center. Finally, attach hanging hardware and hang on the wall.

Ikea has framed mirrors similar to this without lights that they sell for between $50 and $150. This was done with lights for less than $30."

The art of cooking utensils

Michelle gives her laddle, skimmer and spatula the love they deserve by framing them in a Ribba shadow box. I love the idea - it's a fab way to show off your cooking utensils when not in use, rather than stashing them in the drawer or cramming them in an Ordning. Well, provided they are all shiny with no crusty burnt marks on them, er, like mine.

She says, "I recently moved into a new condo that has a tiny kitchen with extreme lack of counter space. I used to store cooking utensils (laddle, skimmer, spatula, etc) in the Ikea Ordning. But unfortunately, there isn't anymore room for it on my counter so I thought of a way to hang the utensils instead.

I used a Ribba shadow box with the Lansa black door handle. I had to change some the hardware (shorter screwn, washers, and botls) for the Lansa in order for it to securely fasten onto the board of the Ribba shadow box. I also painted the board that came with the shadow box the same color of the wall (light grey).

Below my utensil holder, I've also used the Kroken magnetic knife rack for my spices. The containers for the spices came from Canadian Tire.

This solution has been a big help in kitchen. Hopefully it'll help a lot of other people who have little to no counter space."

A little while ago we had this Platta flooring for the bathroom. So hey, why not use it as a shower mat to complete the spa look? That's what Eleazar did.

He's been having it for a few months now and it seems to be holding up. Before you try this you should be aware that the Platta deck has tannic acid which may leak out and stain the floor and grouting.

Nick, an automotive technician in Wilton CT USA, was looking for a work surface top for his toolbox. Shopping around, he found a stainless steel one for almost $800, a butcher block one for about $500. For $129 he bought a Numerar countertop at Ikea and only had to cut it for depth. I'm loving what Monica did with a Lack wall shelf and Vika Fintorp legs - an absolutely gorgeous entry way table.

She ways, "My husband and I needed an entry way table (a landing strip by Apartment Therapy terms) and didn't have much more than 10, maybe 11, inches of depth to work with which made things tough and hard to find a good white console table. We're in the process of re-doing our entry way and going to wallpaper but came up with a really clever way to construct our own entry way table using a Lack shelf ($14.99) and two of the taller Vika Fintorp legs ($10 each).

Probably not a lot of instructions needed on this one, we attached the legs first, then installed the shelf with legs using the Lack mounting bar. One clever trick we found was to figure out the correct placement with the legs and slowly lean the table back, load a sharpie in each of the holes on the back of the Lack shelf and it marked the correct spot to hang the mounting bar."

Galloni Michele from Italy modifies a Stark hall unit to serve as a landing strip divider.

Galloni says, "I modified it by adding an aluminum frame (1.5 x 3 mm) around the unit. The two legs are connected to the bottom via bolts before mounting the legs in place. The frame is connected to the Stark by wood screws, except for the left side, for which I used silicone. The hacked Stark is mounted to the wall by drilling on the right beam three holes shaped like an inverted V and hanging it to three wall screw. For safety reasons I have added an additional support screwed to the wall on top."

Aah, more from Ikea hackers' favourite haunt - the As-Is section. Markus picks up some vanilla As-Is MDF boards and does a bang up job turning them into wall decor. Love how serene they look on his wall.

He says, "My favorite area of Ikea is the 'As-Is' section. And one of my favorite parts of the 'As-Is' section is where they have all their wood parts, such as drawer fronts, cabinet doors, desk parts, etc. I love the variety in color, size and finish of the pieces. Tons of ideas come to mind as I look through the assortment.

I came across 4 identical 13.75" x 13.75" square white pieces of MDF. There was nothing wrong with them and they were only $.99 each. My wife and I wanted to create our own original artwork to put up on one of our walls. A laser engraver would be our means of doing this. I used to work at a trophy / sign shop and practically perfected the laser machine and experimented thoroughly! The owner still lets me use it when I want, which I greatly appreciate (he doesn't even charge me!). We wanted a nice floral/natural image to encompass the 4 pieces which would be laid out in a big square.

I found some cool photoshop brushes online that I wanted to incorporate into the image. So the image was laid out across the 4 pieces subtracting an inch gap between all of them. The image was prepared for lasering and lasered with great success removing the white laminate and revealing the natural MDF beneath. We hung them up and in the square arrangement on the wall and love them! Not bad for a $4 project!"

Amy shares her window seat with us, made from Lack shelving units.

She writes, "We used two Lack shelves to create seating for our playroom. The Lack shelves are super-sturdy, so we turned them on their sides to create window seats. We cut foam padding to fit - definitely a two-person job. We used an electric knife, and I can't imagine anything else that would work. I used the book, Singer: Sewing for the Home, to help with the how-to of the upholstery project.

Ikea didn't carry canvas baskets for either of these shelves, and I thought canvas would be much more practical than Ikea's plastic, paper, or wicker options. So, I found canvas baskets at Wal-Mart. (It was really hard to find what I was looking for!) Wal-Mart seems to carry these sizes in different colors every year during January/February. We're enjoying our new setup!"

Questa è una modifica di Ran, che desiderava un tavolino basso e largo, ma non ne trovava uno che soddisfacesse questi due requisiti. Così ne ha ricavato uno dalle mensole Lack. Mi piacciono molto la dimensione e la striscia bianca. Sarebbe stato grandioso anche con le gambe Capita.

Dice: “Avevo pensato di usare la superficie di una scrivania e dei piedi regolabili, ma alla fine mi è venuta l’idea di usare le mensole Lack – sono più economiche e disponibili in colori più vivaci.

Ho realizzato questo tavolino dalle mensole Lack. Ne ho usate cinque per formare la superficie e ho usato i montanti per i muri come gambe. Quelle spugnette alla base delle gambe sono anche loro Ikea, ma non ne ricordo il nome.

Non è un lavoro molto “pulito”:avrei potuto fare un lavoro migliore nell’assemblaggio delle mensole, ma ho preso solo due scarti di legno che ho trovato nell’immondizia fuori del mio appartamento, un po’ di colla per legno e tre tipi diversi di vite per i montanti perché non ne avevo a sufficienza di un tipo solo. È abbastanza basso da non riuscire a vedere la parte inferiore a meno che non ci si metta a strisciare sotto, quindi non mi faccio problemi più di tanto.

Il risultato finale è comunque piuttosto gradevole – è abbastanza stabile ed economico, considerate le dimensioni spaziose. Anche se non è grande tanto quanto altri tavolini che ho visto, è molto più spesso ed è difficile trovarne così. Siccome le mensole Lack sono disponibili in vari colori (in Israele almeno) si possono fare molte combinazioni."

Un marito è una buona cosa, è quello che inizio a pensare guardando le recenti modifiche. L’abile maritino Larry ha messo su in quattr’e quattr’otto questa tavolo da taglio per l’attività di sartoria della moglie.

Dice: “Mia moglie gestisce un’attività di sartoria e vendita di tessuti online e ha preso da poco un laboratorio. Desiderava un tavolo da taglio nuovo con un paio di requisiti:

Doveva essere grande, davvero grande.
Doveva essere liscio per non far arricciare il tessuto una volta steso e durante il taglio.
Doveva essere alto, più alto dei normali tavoli.

Un pannello truciolare laminato (da Loews), orlato di legno di quercia, su un paio di scrivanie e gambe Galant. Le gambe Galant aumentano la superficie più di un metro, dando vita a un piano di lavoro davvero molto comodo.

Davvero molto carino, l’oggetto ideale fatto apposta per lo scopo senza dissanguarsi (il tutto è costato meno di 350$)”.

Ben ci mostra la sua lanterna di Halloween, fatta con un tubetto da 8 ml di acquerelli Cotman arancione cadmio, un paralume per lampada a sospensione Regolit di carta da 30 cm di diametro e un filo elettrico per lampada Hemma. Bastano un’ora o due ed ecco la vostra Jack-o’-Lantern.

Che ne pensate? Dovrebbe disegnarci su una faccia da Jack-o’-Lantern o lasciarla così come una luna piena da licantropi?

Marc mi ha passato questa idea di scrivania camaleontica (vedi Apartment Therapy's Unplggd).

Vince Welter ha aggiunto le barre luminose Dioder multicolori alla sua scrivania Vika Lauri con del vetro opacizzato e dei bordi di alluminio. Le barre luminose sono posizionate verso la parte frontale. Basta un tocco sull’interruttore e partono.

Ogni tanto ricevo modifiche per laboratori che mi fanno diventare davvero verde d’invidia. Eccone una. Beata te, Kari!

Kari dice: “Ho da poco traslocato in una nuova casa e finalmente posso dirmi fortunata perché ho una stanza intera da dedicare ai miei hobby e lavori manuali. Faccio molti lavori di cucito e avevo bisogno di una superficie di lavoro grande, liscia e alta (per non rovinarmi la schiena) dove poter stendere i tessuti. Avevo anche bisogno di un vano ripostiglio.

Ho risolto comprando 4 mobiletti da cucina (60 e 62 cm). Dopo averli assemblati (io e mio marito), li abbiamo imbullonati sul fondo e abbiamo aggiunto piedi intarsiati (per renderli più alti e più graziosi).

Li abbiamo ribaltati e abbiamo realizzato la parte superiore in MDF. L’abbiamo rivestita con una bella stoffa (in realtà è una tenda da doccia per la larghezza) che abbiamo spillato sotto il bordo.

Abbiamo sovrapposto una lastra di vetro che avevamp. Il tocco finale sono stati gli orli di legno per nascondere le giunture tra i mobiletti e un binario Ikea (Bygel). Secondo me è venuta su molto bene ed è funzionale proprio come speravo. Un tavolo di lavoro largo (con la fessura per sedersi) che può contenere tonnellate di roba.

Dall’altro lato della stanza avevo bisogno di una scrivania. Abbiamo usato ancora un mobiletto per cucina Ikea (uno da 60 e uno da 45cm), con i cassetti da un lato e l’anta dall’altro. Abbiamo apposto un bancone da cucina bianco (Pragel) e abbiamo aggiunto piedi e pomi di vetro. Quando ho avvicinato la sedia ho scoperto che (ops!) il tavolo era più alto della media perché è un bancone. Perciò ho dovuto comprare uno sgabello(Ikea Henriksdal). Ho modificato il rivestimento originale aggiungendo un po’di stoffa Ikea (Fredrika) attorno al fondo dello sgabello per personalizzarlo".

Ho visto molte modifiche sulla minicassettiera Fira, la maggior parte decorative. Questa di PK Shiu è una nuova trovata. Ne è venuta fuori una cassetta per gli attrezzi dall’aspetto ordinato, ma credo ci voglia una mano di vernice rossa.

Dice: “Non più di dieci minuti per trasformare una banale minicassettiera Fira in una cassetta per gli attrezzi high tech per il mio materiale elettronico."

PK ha aggiunto solo delle maniglie Kosing in cima. Tracciate la mediana sui cassettini superiori, avvitate le maniglie lontano abbastanza dai bordi altrimenti i cassetti non possono aprirsi (ha aggiunto 4 rondelle perché le viti erano lunghe) prima di montare normalmente la minicassettiera.

When it first came out a shipload of people [thank you! you know who you are] tipped me on this hack - a Linux cluster Janne ingeniously built into a Helmer drawer cabinet to help with 3D rendering. [via Hack a day] It's not pretty but I've been told that it works wonderfully.

Tim's version (updated 12 January 2009)
When Tim came up with the idea himself, and selected the Helmer cabinet as the ideal case for a cluster, 5 minutes later, he saw Janne's story on Digg.com. Guess great minds really do think alike.

Tim says, "For many applications such as real-time stock prediction algorithms or brain simulations, there is a need for extremely fast and massively parallel computing in the form of a computer cluster. We imagined there existed some kind of cabinet that would be perfect for housing a bunch of hand-built computers, and we found that in Ikea's Helmer. Each computer in the cluster fit inside a single drawer and consisted of a motherboard, power supply, RAM, quad-core CPU w/ fan, and hard drive. The final product is an inexpensive well-ventilated 24-core supercomputer in an impressive 2.65 cubic feet.

The difference is that my design is cleaner and cheaper. For instance his entire cluster cost around $5000 when I did it for $2550. Also, I kept all the drawers intact, putting one computer in each drawer for a total of six. He had wires hanging out all over the place and actually uses two wire that he has to touch together to start each computer - I added a push button to the front of each drawer. Well, like you said in your story - "it's not pretty...", and I took the idea to the next level of elegance. In fact from the front you can barely tell that there's even a supercomputer in it besides one small button on the front of each drawer."

Madga is blessed to have 2 "designer guys" living with her and whipping up such great stuff. With my kitchen, I would so love to have an extra countertop that tucks away nicely. The extra pull out shelf for the coffee maker is an awesome idea.

She says, "Since we have a really small kitchen we have to find storage for everything even some extra countertop. My two designers guys (my dad and my husband) made this for me.

It's a countertop made from a top of a black Lack table (found in the "As is" section of our Ikea store ) and a basic rail from the local hardware store. So, as you can see, in the morning all is hidden behind the aluminum curtain of my Avsikt cabinet.

My coffee maker has a little shelf of its own too just to make it more convenient in the morning (it's a little extra hack for this cabinet made out of a piece found in the "As Is" section also). It's very useful for preparing coffee and toasts in the morning: I just pull it out and voilà some extra countertop!"

Sorry for the spotty posting. Have been running around like a headless chicken - work, some personal projects, helping a friend set up his fish farm. It's all good, but leaves me a little tired and sleep deprived. Hope to get back on speed with hacks today onwards.

These 2 are from Peggy who lives in Switzerland. She says, "When I have some spare time, I try to think about good solutions to my everyday life problems around the house, and when I have even more time... then I realise the projects (and sometimes, it takes weeks to get it done even if it would be a matter of a few hours to do it with nothing and no one coming in between! (I have 3 kids!)

Here's one completed kitchen bench made with Faktum (called Akurum in the US) horizontal wall cabinets and Capita legs on which I fitted a MDF top (cut - paint - screw on).

We sat directly on the cabinets (not so good looking and a bit narrow) for about two weeks because it took me some time to get the MDF. It was fine for the kids... but it started creaking a bit under 'adult' weight! It was about time I finished! To make it more comfortable, the MDF is 50cm (cabinets are 40cm). I attached a long 3cm x 6cm piece of wood to the walls to support the MDF at the back. In the cabinets, I store stuff that I don't need on an everyday basis.

The other hack is an 'olde hack' or 'outdated hack' 'cause the piece is not available anymore (and that's too bad really! I think it was called Blista)... But I think it still illustrates an very important mathematical reality:

CD case = toilet paper roll! :o) It's good to keep that in mind for future hacks!"

Umanonion sends me 2 hacks. I really like the checkerboard look on the armchair (name forgotten).

Umanonion says, "The chair was covered in a plain silver/grey fabric which I removed and replaced with black nylon for the seat and then wove black and white 4" wide strips of elastic. The white strips are closed loops as they just slid over the frame. The black strips have velcro closings at the bottom.

The other is a set of the Miriam lights (link no longer available) that came with a basic plastic sheet with the image of a flower, leaf or similar motif (yawn). I had squares of 1/4" thick plexi cut, covered them with white rice paper, and then floated squares of tin centered on the plexi (I used glue sticks cut to about 1/3" long to float the tin. On top of that, again using a piece of glue stick I put test tubes, held by a piece of wire.

In the test tubes I would put either real roses or ones that I made from ribbon and floral wire and tape. I also wired the units so that they worked together in a checkerboard pattern and put them on 2 dimmer switches. (I had removed the individual power switches from the lights before hanging them as they got in the way.)"

Idoia found the Sandnes shoe cabinet with 4 compartments (pix, right) too large for her space and decided to hack it into half.

Invece di utilizzarli come tende, ho pensato sarebbero stati meglio sul muro sopra la testiera del letto. Aggiungono un bel tocco e rendono la stanza un po’ più alta.

Pink trash can
Jennifer,“Avevo questo paralume Ikea che non andava bene con nessuna lampada della casa. Mi piacevano molto la forma e il colore così l’ho inserito nella pila di cose che avrei utilizzato più in seguito. Avevo anche questo pezzo di legno spaiato su cui praticavo una tecnica pittorica. Dando una piccola risistemata allo studio e visto che l’unico spazio per il cestino della spazzatura era dall’altra parte della stanza…ho capito che questo era un problema da risolvere. Per fare il mio cestino ‘pink trash’ ho messo insieme le tre cose.

Ho svuotato il paralume, l’ho rivoltato e l’ho incollato sulla base di legno. Volevo coprire la giuntura così ho aggiunto un nastro rosa molto carino attorno alla base per nascondere la colla. Dopo sono rimasta con questa cucitura di nastro perché non avevo pensato a nient’altro di meglio. Poi ho agguantato uno scovolino verde chiaro, l’ho trasformato in una coccarda e l’ho incollato. Il mio compagno dice che assomiglia a un bruco arrotolato che dorme. Non capisco… Alla fine ho deciso che ci voleva qualcos’altro su e così mi è venuto in mente il gioco di parole simpatico ‘pink trash’. Ora posso buttare la spazzatura nel mio cestino da scrivania e svuotarlo nel bidone più grande quando è pieno."

Di solito i guardaroba Pax sono abbinati agli accessori interni Komplement. Andy ha scoperto che anche i contenitori Trofast vanno altrettanto bene.

Andy scrive: “Vi dico come abbiamo trasformato alcuni prodotti Ikea in ripostiglio a muro per giocattoli. Non è esattamente una modifica perché non abbiamo cambiato nulla, ma piuttosto un modo diverso di utilizzare i mobili.

Cercavamo una soluzione per riporre i giocattoli dei nostri bambini che li mantenesse puliti, facili da raggiungere e in ordine. Da sempre mi hanno colpito le soluzioni salva-spazio della linea Trofast, ma i pezzi erano troppo piccoli. Così ho deciso di prendere un guardaroba Pax e usare i contenitori di plastica come ripiani. Avrei voluto allinearne 10,ma a causa della posizione delle cerniere delle ante, ne ho potuti inserire solo otto. Non ci sono coperchi,per questo ne ho potuti mettere di più. All’esterno ho attaccato delle etichette fatte da me al computer."

È una buona idea salvaspazio, di bell’aspetto (adoro le righe e i pois) e può essere ripensata quando il neonato cresce.

Ariel dice:“Ecco qualcosa non proprio destinato a questo scopo che ho creato con un elemento di base del sistema componibile Gorm. Abbiamo poco spazio e tutti i fasciatoi che ho visto sono enormi e bassi rispetto alle reali necessità di contenimento di oggetti. Così ne ho costruito uno utilizzando lo scaffale Gorm più profondo che ha la misura giusta per i materassini. Ho usato i cassetti Vacker come contenitori per oggetti piccoli e le cassettine Gorm come contenitori per gli oggetti più grandi (per esempio, pacchi di pannolini o il cuscino per allattamento).

Ho aggiunto anche sui montanti dei tasselli di legno comprati dalla ferramenta per appendere coperte o asciugamani, una borsa per la biancheria (sempre Vacker) e un cesto per pannolini (scolapasta Bygel) in modo da tenerli sempre a portata di mano. Per sfruttare al massimo lo spazio senza compromettere la stabilità, ho incavato il ripiano più basso togliendo un paio di assicelle per farci entrare un bidoncino per pannolini (dietro il bidoncino c’è ancora così tanto spazio da metterci una scatola di proporzioni industriali per salviettine e altro). La parte più impegnativa dell’opera è stata la realizzazione dei paraurti imbottiti contro i bordi spigolosi e le schegge, ma anche questo non è stato poi così difficile.

È davvero molto funzionale, contiene tonnellate di roba, e quando tra uno o due anni il piccolo sarà cresciuto, avremo un mobile del tutto riutilizzabile invece di un fasciatoio ingombrante da dare via. Potrebbe diventare o un mobile da cucina, se mettessi un armadietto sulla superficie più bassa come ulteriore piano d’appoggio e credenza, o il mobile per la macchina da cucire.

Daphna ha realizzato un ripostiglio per conservare l’occorrente per il suo bambino usando una struttura Antonius.

Ha aggiunto due pannelli laterali di propilene. I pannelli sono inseriti tra assi di pino e la struttura. Una tenda agganciata all’accessorio sospensione Index lo ricopre e lo rende più ordinato.

Supporto per lampadario

Ho realizzato una lampada da terra utilizzando svariati prodotti Ikea. Per prima cosa ho preso una lampada da terra/lettura Not che ho comprato un po’ di tempo fa, ho aggiunto un lampadario di quelli da soffitto, che, pare, non sia più in vendita sul sito Ikea e di cui non ricordo il nome, ma credo di averlo comprato uno o due anni fa.

Gli altri accessori utilizzati sono delle lunghe ghirlande di cristallo finto in saldo all’Ikea il Natale precedente (tutte le decorazioni natalizie si chiamano allo stesso modo) per circa 1.99$ ciascuno e un piccolo paralume delle minilampade con lampadine a candela. Ho tolto il paralume dalla struttura metallica della lampada, l’ho incollato al paralume in plastica in dotazione al lampadario e l’ho posizionato in cima alla struttura metallica della Not. Poi ho montato il lampadario così modificato (ho aggiunto altri finti cristalli per renderlo più glamour) in cima al paralume di plastica e inanellato altri cristalli per formare un piccolo reticolato sulla lampada da lettura più piccola”.

Lampadario ‘ramificato’ fai-da-te
Hank dice: “Cercavo un lampadario semplice ma funzionale da posizionare sopra il tavolo del soggiorno della baita in montagna. Volevo uno di quei magnifici lampadari con le ramificazioni che si vedono in tutte le riviste di arredamento per la montagna. Sarebbe stata, per quel che ho visto, una spesa di 5000$ e più. Così ho comprato questo lampadario Ikea (Lerdal, credo) delle ramificazioni sfuse color naturale e ho creato il mio lampadario ‘ramificato’. Sono davvero contento di come è venuto”.

Guia ha questo lampadario molto eccentrico. Realizzato da uno stendibiancheria Jabba. E me lo immagino anche nella versione azzurra e verde.

Un lampadario di lusso per molto molto poco
Alison dice:“Ho appena terminato un lampadario da un paralume per lampada da soffitto Rimfrost. Il lampadario dà l’idea di essere molto più sfarzoso e costoso delle normali lampade Rimfrost e in più ha la forma di un vero lampadario, proprio come quelli che stavo cercando.

Ho usato sei lampade Rimfrost per avere abbastanza cristallo (a 12$ ciascuna, è davvero pochissimo per l’effetto ottenuto) e tutto il resto è stato super economico: dei cavi a spirale e una catena di bigiotteria più alcuni anelli portachiavi per appenderlo e la supercolla per assicurare il supporto alla giusta distanza da ogni lampada e rendere la luminosità più piena”.

Di solito non si associa il nome Ikea agli indumenti, ma qualcuno ha trovato il modo di vestire Ikea. Colorati e vivaci federe, runner, tende, piumini, e chi più ne ha più ne metta…tutto può diventare ‘fashion’.

Quando vuoi fare colpo
A scuola Kerri faceva parte di un club un tempo chiamato “le future casalinghe d’America”, ma poi cambiato con un nome più politicamente corretto. I club non facevano per lei, ma organizzavano gare di moda così ha pensato di mettercela tutta.

“Volevo essere originale”, dice, “volevo realizzare qualcosa quanto più esotico e bizzarro possibile. Dove potevo recarmi per trovare il tessuto? Ikea, certo! Ho comprato questo stravagante tessuto colorato a stampe floreali e l’ho trasformato in una fantastica gonna a ruota!”.

Ragazze in ghingheri

Non sono riuscita a trovare il tessuto dell’abito di Lena sul catalogo 2008 (temo che dovrò tornarci, prendere dell’altro tessuto per Lena e anche qualche metro di Sofia per sua cugina). Dovunque vadano ricevono complimenti. I modelli sono entrambi basati su miei disegni.

Jerker: a volte ritornano

Buon lunedì. Spero che la settimana sia iniziata bene. Ho pensato di mostrarvi 2 mobili studio Fredrik (prima chiamati impropriamente Jerker). Vi è ammassata un casino di roba sugli stereo. Non proprio lo spazio su cui potrei lavorare, ma pare non sia così per Aud1073cH e Steve.

Piano da lavoro informatico con discoteca aggiunta
Aud1073cH ha trasformato la scrivania Jerker in un piano da lavoro informatico.

Molto è stato aggiunto:
- Mensola laterale Jerker a destra
- Braccio mobile per schermo LCD (sinistra)
- Ciabatta multipresa da 12 lunga 10 cm (sulla parte inferiore della mensola)
- Ciabatta da 6 (lato destro del montante sinistro)
- Luce al neon e barra strumenti (fatta di staffe Rubbermaid fissate ai montanti)
- Interruttore rettangolare
- Supporto per altoparlante dalle staffe per mensolette

Palla a specchio per completare il tutto.

Frankenstein Jerker
Steve gestisce una picccola ditta di informatica da casa. Per far funzionare il suo set-up, è corso da Ikea e ha portato a casa ‘Jerker’: 2 tavoli Jerker,il mobile a ripiani Jerker e parecchi altri accessori. “Mi piaceva molto che fossero grandi abbastanza per contenere il mio set-up con doppio monitor e per lasciarmi ancora un mare di spazio”, ha detto.

Avevo un piccolo televisore e un lettore DVD posizionati su una mensola al lato del Jerker. L’unico problema era che il lettore era troppo largo per entrarci senza rischiare di cadere. Siccome la scrivania Jerker si può trasformare in un’infinità di modi - la chiamo Frankenstein - mi son fatto un giro nel reparto dei ‘già pronto’ dell’Ikea della mia città e ho trovato la soluzione. Ho abbinato un mobile a ripiani Antonius (€ 3,50), e un piano per tastiera estraibile Summera (ce l’avevo e ho fissato il tutto sul montante).

Dall’altro lato della scrivania avevo bisogno di altro spazio per i ripiani delle due stampanti, e il mobile a ripiani Jerker è stato messo da parte di nuovo. Così ho abbinato un montante Stolmen pole and 2 shelves. a due mensole. Questo mi ha permesso di posizionare le mensole abbastanza in alto per ricavare una zona in basso con contenitori. Handem mi ha inviato dalla Turchia una serie di modifiche semplicemente graziose. "So che queste non sono modifiche che cambieranno il mondo, ma ve le mostro lo stesso".

Se c’è una cosa per cui l’Ikea è insuperabile, oltre agli imballaggi sottili, è la pubblicità. Per la loro apertura a Kobe, Giappone, Ikea ha decorato i treni con i suoi mobili. L’ora di punta non è mai stata così bella.
